Adventures of the Creatively Maladjusted
We loaded up my brother-in-law’s Expedition, hooked up the trailer (still have a bunch of stuff in Loveland to pick up) and headed for Colorado via New Mexico way. We were enjoying the ride and the scenery when all the sudden the truck just stopped. Picture this, we are still 20 miles from the nearest town and had only seen one other vehicle on the road with us that morning. Amazingly enough just 1 mile back, I had tried to use my cell phone and there was no service but we are stuck in just the right place and my phone WORKS!! Hallelujah! OK, but who ya gonna call?
I decided to call 411 and ask for the town’s sheriff. They very nicely gave me the number of a tow company. I called them and left a message on their voice mail. We patiently waited and watched a couple of cars come and go. One did slow down up the road a bit, I know they were asking themselves, “Maybe we should go back…” but fear must have won out and they kept going. Finally the tow company called back. I told him that we thought maybe the gauges screwed up and we ran out of diesel fuel or the filters clogged up. “OK” he says. I’ll be out in a while.
About 45 min later here came our wonderful helper and his son. They put in the diesel fuel, and my husband tried to change the filters. No luck, don’t have the right tools. “No worries” Tow guy is going to run back to town get right filters and come back in his car as that will be faster. Another hour later…
No good, so we hook up the trailer to his car (remember he drove his car rather than the tow truck to be faster) and went to town. He took us to the Ford Dealer. They start to tell us that they cannot look at the truck until next week, then the mechanic overhears that we are stranded and says he’ll get to it sooner. But they close at 5pm. It is now 3. We drop the trailer at the tow truck company lot and he goes back for the truck. My husband and he get the filters changed and try to start us up. NO GO. Ford is closing in a few minutes so they hurry up and get the truck to Ford. Of course not before everyone has already left. Oh well, tomorrow.
We are dropped at a nice little motel for the night. All is good except they don’t even have coffee the next morning! Can you imagine me in the morning with no coffee? Not pretty. But my Knight in Shining Armor of a husband runs across the street to Burger King (Wonderfully GOOD coffee for future reference, Nannette) Then he walks the couple miles back to the Ford Dealer.
A little while later, my motel room phone rings. The owner of the motel is asking if I need a ride to the dealer! What a sweetie. (There is no taxi in Las Vegas NM). So I meet my husband at Ford, they had told him they would look at the truck in a couple of hours. We are know parked in the lobby and enjoying the coffee.
Now for the Angel of the story…
A couple of older gentlemen and a lady had come in to get their cars serviced and had joined us in the lobby. They were having a conversation about of all things – Alternative Medicine. I couldn’t read my book any longer, I HAD to easedrop. Next thing I know, Jack has joined in their conversation. Before long a couple hours passed, we all became friends and then their cars were done and it was time for all of them to leave. Our Angel, Jackie, stopped to say a prayer for us all before she left. Jack and I sat in the glow of the afternoon thinking how wonderful that had been, when here come Jackie back to invite us to lunch!
We went to, get this, “Smiling Faces” Mexican restaurant. Had a wonderful time, then she dropped us back off at Ford. We then got the news. Oil pump and computer chip. Parts ordered. Maybe tomorrow (Friday). Ok. But let’s go to Super8..Coffee and internet.
Friday…no oil pump. Maybe Monday. Super8, we’re baaaccck.
Saturday morning. Cell phone rings. Jackie and her mother would like to come visit. How great is that! We’ll be here, not going any where. When Jackie and her beautiful mother arrive they tell me they would like to have a Biofeedback session. I love doing sessions so this sideline in our trip just keeps getting better. Had a fantastic morning with the two of them and have now come up to my room and get to write about my adventures. Who knew getting stranded could be so fun.
